Job Description
The Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard is looking to expand its staff of experienced project managers in the Space Planning and Design office. The purpose of this office is to align space with culture through the design of laboratory and workplace projects. The Space Planning and Design team is responsible for implementing renovation projects to help the Broad Institute meet its scientific mission. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with solid project management skills and a thorough knowledge of the lab design and construction process. The successful candidate should have 7-10 years of experience managing design and construction projects from either the client, construction, or design sides of the industry. They must have the ability to manage complex schedules and budgets and be experienced working with other stakeholders to facilitate decision making. Candidates should be able to work autonomously on projects as well as be able to collaborate with the broader team of project managers in the group. Essential for this role is a solid understanding of the management tasks and responsibilities of an Owner’s Project Manager during the study, design, and construction phases to deliver significant projects on time and on budget. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, exceptional project planning acume and problem solving, strong team and leadership abilities.

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard was launched in 2004 to improve human health by using genomics to advance our understanding of the biology and treatment of human disease, and to help lay the groundwork for a new generation of therapies.
The Space Planning and Design (SPD) team is a part of the broader facilities department which also encompasses Facilities Management and Environmental Health and Safety. The SPD team is a diverse group of professionals with backgrounds in architecture, project management, cost estimating, science, and data analysis. It is a small group where an emerging professional can receive good mentoring and professional development.

The Project Manager/Senior Project Manager will design and lead all aspects of successful projects from conceptual design through completion. An employee in this role should be a creative, self-motivated design professional who is able to apply current technologies to achieve design excellence
How You Will Contribute
- Exhibit leadership qualities with peers and outsourced resources.
- Work with groups to build trust to create quality workspace solutions.
- Develop RFP's for external professional services such as architects, workplace strategists, and contractors. Evaluate responses, negotiate contracts with assistance of Procurement and administer contracts through the life of the project.
- Work with other Broad Institute Administration teams, such as Facilities and BITS, to develop design guidelines that support the Broad’s workplace strategy.
- Provide design and workplace guidance throughout the capital project life cycle to support overall goals.
- Work closely with the design team and external consultants to create conceptual/schematic designs and plans.
- Collaborate with the Construction Management Office to confirm scope and develop schedules and budgets for projects.
- Plan, initiate, and run project meetings with users and design teams. Serve as the main point of contact and liaison between management and design/construction teams.
- Set deadlines, supervise, and summarize progress of the project team, and provide updates to the management team.
- Conducts analysis and review of work area(s) affected by space planning to ensure that current location(s) and availability at destination location(s) is reflected accurately.
- Oversee vendor and project team members work to ensure compliance with the contract.
- Plan and execute all relocation of staff and equipment impacted by construction projects.
- Facilitates post-occupancy support and reviews to ensure deliverables were executed and client's expectations were met.
- Coordinate ancillary parts for capital projects, such as FF&E procurement, Security, Audio/Visual Design.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters Degree
- Seven to ten years of experience in the design and construction of lab and office space and experience working on large complex construction projects.
- Working knowledge of laboratory processes and equipment.
- Basic understanding of applicable building codes.
- Ability to self manage and multi-task as well as the ability to mentor junior staff.
- Solid organizational skills, strong people skills and intuition.
- Strong working knowledge of architectural drawings and furniture and space planning concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to interact with executive level external and internal clients. Ability to successfully communicate with architects, contractors, and team members.
- Demonstrated high level of performance in project budgeting, contract negotiations and scheduling
- Ability to provide efficient, timely and reliable service to client(s). Ability to respond effectively to sensitive issues; to collaborate, problem solve and multi-task; to adapt to change when necessary
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively present information.
- Knowledge of various Productivity applications such as Microsoft Office and Google
- Bluebeam Revu
- Autocad and Revit experience is a plus
